Appearing within a matter of days after “The Divan Japonaise”, Lautrec presented another poster featuring Jane Avril. This one celebrated the entertainer’s debut at the Jardin de Paris, after nearly two years of retirement. This is perhaps Lautrec’s most innovative use of an enframing device in the placement of the musician’s cello and its successful isolation of Avril as the unquestioned focal point of the composition.
